Last Day in Ethiopoa

Hi Everyone,

Alemu's sister and Abdul

Alemu and Denny
We had an eventful night last night as we were invited to dinner at our guide, Alemu's, house.  He and his sister prepared us delicious lasagna, injera (Ethiopian bread), bean wot (a traditional Ethiopian sauce), and dabbo (a very large bread made in a special oven with boiling water).  After dinner, we had Ethiopian coffee prepared in the tradional way (over coals).  The dinner was a celebration welcoming Feven as a part of our family.  Another family was also celebrating the adoption of their son, Abdul.

At the dinner, we all wore traditional Ethiopian clothing as we ate and celebrated.  Alemu introduced us to the ceremonial cutting of the dabbo.  The dabbo comes out in a very large basket covered with a cloth.  A large knife is placed in the center of the bread.  The men (and boys) each take a turn cutting through the huge loaf (no women/girls are allowed to cut it).  The bread is then passed out in large hunks to all who are present.  Feven and Abdul love dabbo.  Theo's mom and dad liked it too.  Theo says he is not a fan.

Today is our last day in Ethiopia.  It is a bittersweet day.  We are glad to be coming home but we are sad to be leaving this beautiful country.  It does help to know that we plan on coming back when Feven is older to to explore Ethiopia as a family.  This morning we all ate in the hotel's dining room.  Theo was impressed at how much his little sister could eat.  She ate more than he did.

Thanks for following along on the blog.  It is likely our last entry as we will be catching our flight late this evening (at 11:00 p.m.).  We won't be in Rochester again until Saturday afternoon.  Theo is glad not to be sick on the flight home.  We are sure Theo will have much more to share with you when he gets home.
